What should a company do in the case that a balance sheet needs to be presented soon to the public (shareholders) but the company is struggling with large debts? These will of course have to be shown on the balance sheet, but there will be some huge consequences, I think... What is your advice?

You already answer your own question within your post I think. Presenting a balance sheet is compulsory and for that very reason it can not be prevented or avoided in any way. Of course, shareholders will react to the bad news and this will also be reflected on the stock market as well.
