Hello. After having accumulated huge debts and seeing no way to get rid of them, I have unfortunately become bankrupt. As I was not a home-owner I though I could cope with the consequences, but it all is a lot more difficult than I first thought, you really have no control over your own money. I am using a Natwest Step Account, but after being discharged from bankruptcy I now would like to have a current account again. This seems like mission impossible though, Ive been turned down a number of times already and now dont know where to turn. Can you get a current account after bankruptcy?

Hello there. I have the same problem, and although my own bank told me I could upgrade to a current account (I also have a basic account) after getting a discharge certificate. I have paid 60 pounds for this but my bank didnt give me the account after all. Sad as it is, this is the hard reality after being declared bankrupt. I suppose well have to hang on a bit longer!

Declaring bankruptcy is a huge problem for those trying to rebuild their credit. Part of this rebuilding is responsibly paying bills on time. This is difficult if there's no bank account from which to do this. However, the situation isn't hopeless. With a little homework and imagination, opening a bank account after bankruptcy is possible.

I also signed up just to reply to this thread, firstly I'd like to say to all who posted on here thanks so much been trying for a Bank account for ages, just wanted to take the strain off my mother for using her account for DD's and using her card online which she hates.Thats all I wanted was a account that had DD facilities and a Debit card, and like those comments above the Co-op absolutely FANTASTIC cannot fault them. So happy and overjoyed , brilliant.

Declaring bankruptcy is a big and long term problem and trying to rebuilt the status is more difficult. You can get guidance from any Bankruptcy Lawyers.
