Debt bondage as modern day slavery?

| What do you know about debt bondage? I am supposed to give a small lecture in my class on this matter, and I am not really sure what are the most important things I should focus on, while making a concept. So, any ideas are welcome, as well as any info you have about it. And why do they call it modern slavery? |

| I think that the matter you will discuss in your class is really an interesting one, and also – very important one. Unfortunately, you will hear many terrifying data about it, and find some really disturbing facts. It is considered modern slavery because people are forced into work, very often without any payment or with some very small one, in order to repay debt. Quite often kids are forced into this slavery. Although this may seem unreal to you, you should know that it is happening still in some parts of the world. |

| The thing which frightened me was the fact that 40 million people in India are bond workers, who do not work to repay their debts, but debts made many generations ago. I am sure they start as kids, and spend their whole lives working for others. I know that this is considered as forcing into slavery and punished by laws in many countries, but not everywhere. For example, even though slavery was outlawed in Niger some 5-6 years ago, nowadays 8 % of inhabitants are slaves. |
