Definition of direct taxation?

Apparently there are different kinds of tax. Direct taxation and indirect taxation are different things. But in what way they are different and what is indirect and direct about, I am just not too sure about that. Can you give me a definition of what direct taxation means? Thanks for your help.

Hello. The term direct tax confusingly has different meanings in different countries. In the United Kingdom, it means simply taxes that are levied directly - be it from an individual or a company - and income tax is the best and most known example of this. In he US, the term has several meanings...
