Hey. Is there someone here who can tell me about the difference between stocks and shares? I know its both to do with the stock market, but apart from that, its all Greek to me! I often hear people going on about stocks and shares. Perhaps it's even the same thing. I hope somebody can explain it to me. My dad has some shares in Microsoft. What does that mean?

Nowadays, its all a bit blurry and many people used the words stocks and shares interchangeably when they talk about the bits of paper that denote ownership of part of a company. In fact, stocks refers to any ownership certificates in any company, whereas shares means the certificates of a particular company. Its a minor difference really, and one that not many people understand. That your dad has shares in Microsoft, means that hes in part owner of that company!
