KC officers attacked after ticketing illegally parked car

By JOHN SHULTZ
The Kansas City Star

Two officers who had just ticketed an illegally parked car on Kansas City's East Side were attacked Thursday evening, police said.

Five persons were in custody and the one of the officers was at an area hospital for evaluation Thursday night after the incident in the 5700 block of Mersington Avenue. None of the suspects had been charged in the attack.

Police spokesman Sgt. Tony Sanders said the officers -- a man and a woman -- were called to the neighborhood to check on unspecified activity at a house about 6:30 p.m.

When they arrived, the officers ticketed a car for being parked facing the wrong direction on the west side of Mersington.

As they got back into their patrol cruiser, Sanders said, a woman came out of the house, grabbed the ticket from under a wiper blade, crumpled it up and threw it at the police car.

Sanders said the officers got back out of the car to cite the woman for littering when four of the woman's companions came out of the house and starting beating on the officers.

He said the female officer, a recent addition to the force, ended up on the ground on the other side of the street. The male officer called for assistance as he fought off the assailants.

Sanders was unsure how many officers responded to the call, but the suspects were apprehended and taken into custody shortly after arriving. The male officer attacked was treated by paramedics at the scene, he said.

Capt. Scott Glaeser said the officers' patrol vehicle was equipped with a video camera, and the attack probably was recorded.

Residents camped on their porches and meandered out into the cool night air to watch as investigators worked the scene. More than a dozen officers, including members of the department's tactical squad, stood watch over the area.

"People did something they shouldn't have," Sanders said.

WTF is right. What possesses people sometimes? It's pretty scarry how easily people freak out and respond with violence. I just saw something this morning on Good morning America: a man went up to a complete stranger in RI and punched him in the face. He had a friend tape the incident. Why? Just for fun. And another thing in WI (I think) 4 kids kidnapped a woman and partially burried her alive. All videotaped. They said they were filming it for a movie they were making. What is up with people these days?

If that woman was my mother/wife/sister/daughter, I'd hunt those four down and kill them all, slowly. burning mad

Yes, or just send them your avatar and scare them slowly to death.

That's exactly what I was thinking.

Cripes... I just mailed off a parking ticket payment today... my son kindly acquired it while borrowing my truck to help a friend's mom move... at least he paid for it. And to my knowledge he didn't attempt to knock the snot out of any officers....

we get thanked all the time for writing traffic tickets in excess of $100.00
but a $5.00 parking ticket people scream and get extremely upset about. We consitently get more grief over the parking tickets than anything else.

A lady who owned a $1,000,000.00 house came in and threw a ticket at one officer, hit him in the face. She was also issued a >300.00 ticket for harassment in addition to having to pay for the ticket also.

In 'big' cities I see people parked the wrong way on streets ALL THE TIME without any tickets...

Just an observation.

lots of towns around here have it. It is mainly a safety issue for cars pulling out to traffic Joel. Hard to see on coming cars when you are parked along the curb side of the street. When you think about it, it really makes sense. You could turn out into the traffic and get hit

Oh, I agree. I'm just always surprised at how well...'accepted' it is to do that....
