I am an equity virgin! That is, I don't understand a thing about equities. Can you help me to learn more about this? What is an equity, and what isn't? And how do people use them in order to make money? Forgive me if I sound a bit stupid, but not everyone can be a financial expert...

Equities are stocks or other securities that represent underlying interests of an individual. It is as simple as that. When you see the term shareholders' equity on a company's balance sheet, then that tell you how much money was contributed by the shareholders. Owning equities means you have stocks or bonds.
