I have just arrived in the United Kingdom from Poland. Although I have loved there all my life, I am married to a citizen of Britain and already have citizenship myself. So why is it so hard to open a basic bank account? I think there is not one high street bank I have not been to. What's wrong? Please help me!
Most likely the problem is that you have not built up any credit score. The banks don't therefore know whether you are a responsible borrower or not. The best thing I think is to go to the Halifax and ask for a very basic Card Cash account. This has limited facilities and they practically refuse no one. If you want to build up your credit score, consider getting a high charge credit card like Vanquis.
