A banker friend of mine used the term active management during a conversation that we had. I did not want to ask him about it at the time, but I do want to know. Is active management in fact a term to describe some kind of investment management? Please let me know.

Yes, active management is a type of investment management in which there is a strategy that seeks to make returns that are in excess of the benchmark. It is a very hands on management technique but of course it can literally pay off in the end! It is therefore a popular management technique.
