After being employed for a long time and having got used to working for someone else within a company, I am now very seriously considering becoming self employed. I am not getting a clear picture of the tax obligations that this status brings with it though, and I would like to get your help on the matter. Who can explain me how the self employed tax system works?

The most important difference is that, while your employer is responsible for paying your taxes (ie, deducting them from your wages) if you are employed, self employed people have to arrange this themselves. The same goes for NI contributions. You register yourself as self employed with the HMRC, which is where you also get your tax return forms from.
