Good morning to you all! Would the tax experts in the room please stand up? I need some information about excise tax programs and how they work. I think that excise tax is something extremely vague, and I don't understand its nature. What products are excise tax programs used for?

The goods, commodities and activities on which excise taxes are levied vary from country to country - although it has to be said that excise taxes are not actually levied in that many countries. It seems to be a Commonwealth thing. I am assuming you are asking about the United States. There, excise tax programs are for the production or sale, or for a license for certain activities.

As far as I have always know, excise tax programs apply to goods that are produced within the country. This is in difference to goods that were not produced in the country but were imported, and on which customs is charged instead. Perhaps someone could confirm that to make sure?

That is indeed part of it, but it is not the whole story... Scary really, how confusing taxes can be at times! But excise tax in particular... You see, excise tax programs are also applied to activities, rather than goods. A gambling license for example, is part of an excise tax program.
