What institution is responsible for bank deposit insuring?

| Of course we are all at least somewhat concerned about any funds which we have deposited into bank accounts. What if there is a bank robbery, or worse, the entire bank collapses (Barings). For this reason I am asking what institution is responsible for bank deposit insuring? Thank you for your replies. |

| To be honest, I have never been too worried about this. Stories like Barings don't happen all that often (hopefully never again!) and as for more simple disasters, your bank is insured. This is usually with an outside insurance company, unconnected to your bank. Even if they happen to offer insurance themselves. |
