What is General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade?

| I’ve heard that, before General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade was created, there was an intention to create something quite different, so this came as some kind of plan B. Actually, people couldn’t agree on some issues, so they decided to make something at least half-useful, if there is no better option. What can you tell me on this matter? If you think that this is nonsense, tell me, so that I can search some real reasons for making General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade. |

| I think that you are right, if I can recall well, there was an intention to create something that would be called as the International Trade Organization, but that idea didn’t went well, so they worked on General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade instead. GATT had many attempts and changes during past century and there are many variations of what it’s supposed to be like. You can read a lot about it in encyclopedias. |
