| When I watch CNN or some other news channel, among the headlines there are some figures which I know that are from the stock exchanges and that ends my knowledge about those things. Can you tell me what kind of index is Nikkei stock average? Does it have anything to do with our everyday lives? This is so complicated for me. |

| Nikkei is, as you have said, a stock market index and it goes for Tokyo Exchange. This is the most relevant stock market index for Asia and it is most watched index on this continent. It is actually some kind of the price-weighted average for the currency, which is Yen. I think that it is usually revised once a year. Its name is derived from the newspaper which calculates it on daily basis – Nihon Keizai Shimbun. It is being calculated so that stocks are weighted so that par value of yen per share is 50. I think that there is no easier explanation of this term and I hope that you will be able to understand it properly. |
