When word-of-mouth communication in business is effective?

| I have heard from many different people that word of mouth marketing or communication can be a very effective way of marketing products in business, in certain situations. Can you tell me, when is such kind of marketing effective and why? I would appreciate hearing from you with some answers. |

| I more or less see word of mouth marketing as an attempt to influence the consumer opinion, from the side of the company that would like to gain the positive publicity. It can work but is rarely effective and can also go horribly wrong, as we have probably all seen. |
