I have been told that economic growth will have a negative effect on the quality of life for some layers of the population and that this is something that especially applies to economies in transition. I was surprised to hear that, thinking that economic growth would be beneficial as a whole. Can you tell me why that is not the case?

If you are talking about former communist countries in transition, then the example is clear. Let's take China for instance, which is increasingly enforcing all kinds of reforms. This is good for China's economy, but many people who received stability from the state before are now left to fend for themselves; something in which they do not always succeed.
