The Master of Business Administration (MBA) is an internationally-recognized post graduate degree in business communication, designed to prepare students and further develop the skills required for careers in business and management. The MBA program is recognized worldwide and is considered as a major step towards a successful business management career. The value of the MBA, however, is not limited strictly to the 'business' world. An MBA can also be useful for those pursuing a managerial career in the public sector, government, private industry, and other areas.

If you are a job-seeker who is looking for more responsibility and pay, seeking more leverage in obtaining a work/life balance, exploring changing careers or contemplating a move into management, returning to school to get your MBA might be the right choice. But remember, an MBA is not a ticket to advancement. It needs to be combined with experience for high level jobs. If you've been at a low level job, an MBA won't do that much. You need to learn political savvy, leadership skills and gain an aptitude for people management. This calls for books, research, courses, experience and learning on the job.

You should consider some MBA alternatives also. If you would like some degree alternatives to MBA you can try a master’s degree in marketing, which is very good alternative to MBA for marketing. If you are interested in those fields of you can also try a master degree in human resources or management. In other fields, you have an option to try a master’s degree in public policy, health administration or in nonprofit management. Those can also serve as an alternative to an MBA.

If you are interested in non degree alternatives to an MBA you have few options. You can just take some business courses at a university continuing education program. If you are interested in marketing, maybe you don't need a whole marketing MBA. For management, human resources or venture capital skills, the same applies.

Most entrepreneurs don't have an MBA. They may have taken courses and learned by doing. Maybe they hired an MBA themselves. However, you don't always need an MBA. Experience learned on the job or in your field may be sufficient.

In the end you probably see that MBA isn’t everything and that without it you can also accomplish anything that someone with an MBA degree can. Of course an MBA degree is great, but you should consider all the alternatives and choose the one most appropriate for yourself.
